Editor's Note If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do things worth writing. -- Benjamin Franklin Source: www.brainyquote.com On the Cover MARITIME REPORTER AND ENGINEERING NEWS www.marinelink.com nyone that reads these pages on a regular basis knows that I love a good quote. The above came to mind when, within weeks of each other, the marine industry lost two ubiquitous figures: Captain Luther H. Blount and Karl H. Senner. While I did not know either man personally, both led companies and lives that left an indelible mark on the marine industry. While Capt. Blount is perhaps best-known for the design and construction of the New York City Circle Line Ferries -- a NYC icon -- he was a veritable jack-of-all-trades, running a boatyard and a cruise line, while finding time in his 90 years to develop 21 patents, including a Dihedral Twin Hull Catamaran. a New Oyster Culture Method - Float, and a Pint-a-Flush Toilet, among others. Capt. Blount embodied the notion of "think global, act local," as he succeeded in building and operating boats, but was passionate about caring for the waters which supported his livelihood, dedicating much time and money to aquaculture study and development for future generations. For anyone who has ever built or operated a boat in the Gulf of Mexico -- which is featured in this month's focus on the workboat industry starting on page 32 -- it is highly unlikely that you'll find one that doesn't know the company that Mr. Senner created and that he and his family built into a maritime powerhouse. Mr. Senner, who emigrated from Germany at the age of 21 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, built a company that is synonymous with the workboat industry in the Gulf of Mexico and around the world, supplying propulsion equipment that can be found on hundreds of vessels of all shape and size. Two men that definitely did "things worth writing." A ISSN-0025-3448 USPS-016-750 No. 11 Vol. 68 118 East 25th Street, New York, NY 10010 tel: (212) 477-6700; fax: (212) 254-6271 Founder: John J.
