Marine Propulsion
tug River Eagle. A pair of non-Cummins diesels of unknown age had powered it. After their performance on River Star, the decision was made to repower with a pair of Cummins KTA19 M3s rated for 500 hp each at 1800 rpm. By early May the new engines and their Twin Disc 518 gears were in place on the reworked engine beds of the 39-year-old tug. Petrunia was finishing up the project by taking care of his concern for adequate air and installing a big blower capable of pumping 4,000 cu. ft. of air per minute into the engine room.
Injector Delivers 3% Diesel Fuel Savings
A diesel engine fuel injector that offers vessel operators up to 3 percent saving in fuel consumption, a figure validated in testing by leading engine builder Electro-Motive, is now being supplied
to the marine industry by Interstate Diesel of Cleveland, Ohio. According to estimates taken from the study, potential savings range from $10,000 to $18,000 per engine, per year, depending on duty cycle. In addition to its fuel saving ability, patented internal parts in the ECOTIP Superstack Injector help reduce smoke opacity by 75 percent and particulate matter by 47 percent.
New TCA88-25 Turbocharger
As part of its program of continuous product development, the Augsburgbased turbocharger business of MAN B&W has launched the new TCA88-25, an uprated version of the established TCA88-20 turbocharger. A new compressor design with new wheel geometry has made it possible to extend the application range of the TCA 88 turbocharger by some 16 percent, based on an increase in volume flow per turbocharger from 50.4 m³/s in the TCA8820 to more than 58.6 m³/s in the TCA8825. Accordingly, the maximum supercharged engine output per turbocharger
