Offshore Driller Consolidation Coming?
Tight demand, attractive valuations and a Norwegian company that has said it is ready to get bigger have sparked widespread expectation for consolidation in the U.S. offshore drilling sector in 2007, according to a Reuters report. Possible scenarios include a leveraged buyout by a private equity firm, large-scale recapitalizations or the acquisition of a U.S. driller by an overseas company, U.S. analysts said. And a lot of industry attention is focused on Norwegian driller SeaDrill Ltd., which reportedly said it was looking to grow by 'creating a world leading offshore drilling company.' The most talked about targets for consolidation: GlobalSantaFe, Noble Corp., Diamond Offshore Drilling, and Ensco International, according to the Reuters report.

VT Halter Secures $165m Navy Contract Modification
VT Halter Marine announced a contract modification worth $165m by the U.S. Navy for the Egyptian Navy's Fast Missile Craft (FMC) project. This modification enables VT Halter Marine, as the prime contractor, to procure long lead time materials which include items, equipment and or components that need to be developed in advance of the required delivery dates due to their complex nature. VT Halter Marine secured the Phase I functional design contract for $28.8m on November 30, 2005. This contract modification was issued as a letter contract with a not-to-exceed price of $165m, which brings the total amount awarded on this program to approximately $194m. The program value could grow to more than $450m.
Bollinger Converts Barge
Bollinger Gulf Repair completed the retrofit and modifications of a Penn Maritime Inc. oceans tank barge to an OPA '90 compliant articulated unit. The 360-ft., 66,500 barrel black oil Barge POTOMAC arrived at Bollinger's New Orleans east facility and began the transformation from a single sided hull to double hull vessel with a new outer skin to meet the requirements of OPA '90.
