NOAA dedicated a new high-speed research vessel. It will work the waters of the Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. The vessel will be used primarily for research missions but will also support education, monitoring and emergency response patrols. The vessel has been named the Auk in honor of an extinct seabird that once wintered in these waters. Built by All American Marine of Bellingham, Wash., the 50-ft. This vessel is a 37.5-ft. all aluminum catamaran powered by twin Cummins 420 hp turbo diesels propelled by Hamilton HJ292 water jets. This patrol boat can attain a top speed of over 36 knots and operates at a service speed of approximately 27 knots. The vessel is outfitted with fire fighting and dewatering equipment, in addition to extensive electronic equipment related to patrol and surveillance operations. Moose Boats has provided the King County Sheriff's Office Marine Dive Unit with a multi-function, all weather capable vessel for routine patrol and marine emergencies on Lake Washington and the Puget Sound. King County has vast miles of shoreline and is home to tens of thousands of registered boats which use its waterways daily. The Marine Dive Unit is responsible for law enforcement and emergency services on the water, in addition to providing water safety education and police diving services throughout the entire county. Typical calls for service include enforcement and safety inspection contacts, disabled boats and debris removal, as well as open water rescues and medical emergencies. In the past, the Marine Dive Unit has responded to incidents such as airplane collisions and crashes, numerous boat and structure fires, explosions, vehicles in the water, tramway accidents, and many environmental spills.
